pnpm 12.0.0 went stable on August 26, and the follow-ups landed fast: 12.1.0 on August 29, then 12.2.0 and a 12.2.1 patch on September 1. This is the Rust-CLI major, and for monorepo teams the pitch is deterministic installs. Peer-resolution cycles now break canonically, so the same graph always produces the same lockfile, and cycle-heavy workspaces see peer resolution run 2-3x faster.
The quieter changes fix real annoyances. Git dependencies on GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket are treated as identities, so every reference form resolves through the host's canonical HTTPS URL and stops locking differently by how you wrote it. Strict pnpm-workspace.yaml key validation makes a typo'd setting fail loudly, packageImportMethod auto tries hardlinks before cloning on Linux, and engineStrict now holds through optionalDependencies subtrees so a bad engine in a transitive optional cannot slip through.
On top of the major, 12.1.0 adds workspace task orchestration with per-task concurrency limits set in pnpm-workspace.yaml, so you can stop hand-rolling parallel run scripts. It also shares remote build artifacts across macOS and Windows, so CI matrices compile once and share the result. 12.2.0 lets catalogs resolve workspace: deps and speeds up discovery in large workspaces.
Nothing here forces an emergency migration, but if you run a cycle-heavy monorepo, the deterministic lockfile and 2-3x peer resolution speedup are worth the upgrade this week.
