OpenAI now offers zero data retention for eligible frontier-model API customers, so prompts and responses stay out of training and out of staff hands unless you opt in.
OpenAI now lets eligible API customers run frontier models with zero data retention. OpenAI doesn't retain prompts or responses, staff can't view them, and they won't touch training data without your explicit opt-in. For a frontend team, that removes the "we can't send code to an API" blocker that has kept a lot of AI features out of CI/CD pipelines.
ZDR deployments keep customer content on customer-controlled infrastructure. OpenAI is also developing a hosted option that encrypts content under keys your team controls, so the retention question stops being the sticking point. If you've been routing around a frontier API because of what happens to your prompts afterward, this is worth a second read.
Private Safety Processing arrives as a preview. Automated systems scan for misuse patterns across related interactions, like an agentic workflow that keeps going after you told it to stop, without exposing the underlying content to OpenAI personnel. Agent loops already run inside build pipelines and browser tooling, so catching misuse no longer means handing OpenAI your raw transcripts.
The catch: ZDR is for eligible customers, not a blanket policy, and the hosted option is still in development. If you've been holding off on wiring a frontier model into your stack over data-retention concerns, re-run that evaluation this week.
